Korean Licorice Mint

Korean Licorice Mint

Agastache rugosa

This is a striking herbaceous perennial prized for both its ornamental and culinary appeal. With sweetly scented purple flower spikes rising above deep green foliage, this plant is a magnet for bees, butterflies, and beneficial insects. The leaves and flowers have a unique, sweet licorice flavour that makes a delicious addition to herbal teas, desserts, or as a refreshing mint substitute. It thrives in a variety of garden settings, including containers, pollinator gardens, and herbal borders.

Where Can You Grow Korean Licorice Mint?
Best suited for Zones 4-9, this plant prefers full sun and well-drained soil. Once established, it is drought-tolerant and low-maintenance, making it an ideal choice for water-wise or ornamental herb gardens.

History and Historical Uses
Native to East Asia, Korean Licorice Mint has been used traditionally in both Korean and Chinese medicine for its soothing and digestive properties. The plant’s sweet aroma and floral flavour have made it a staple in teas and tonics, while its vibrant blooms have long been admired in cottage and wildflower-style gardens.
