About Native Blue Elderberry
A beautiful and useful addition to the garden, this native elderberry produces large white flower clusters in late spring followed by rich, dark blue berries in late summer. The berries are a traditional food source when cooked and are high in antioxidants, while the flowers are often used for teas and cordials. The plant is multi-stemmed and vigorous, forming a tall and attractive shrub that supports birds, pollinators, and traditional plant medicine practices.
Where Can You Grow Native Blue Elderberry?
Native Blue Elderberry thrives in Zones 3–9, preferring moist, well-drained soils and part to full sun. It does especially well in low-lying or riparian zones but is surprisingly drought tolerant once mature.
History and Historical Uses
Long used by Indigenous communities of the Pacific Northwest, the berries and flowers of the native elderberry have been valued for their medicinal, nutritional, and ceremonial roles. Elderberry syrup, wine, and jelly are just a few ways these fruits have been enjoyed, and the flowers have traditionally been used in soothing teas.

Zones 8–9: Direct sow outdoors in autumn or stratify seeds and plant in early spring.
Zones 5–7: Stratify seeds in the fridge for 60–90 days before planting.
Zones 3–4: Start indoors with stratified seeds, harden off, and transplant after last frost.
How to Grow and Harvest Native Blue Elderberry
Planting: Sow in autumn or stratify and sow in spring; plant 1cm (0.5in) deep in moist soil.
Watering: Keep consistently moist in first year; less water needed once established.
Harvesting: Harvest berries when fully dark blue and slightly soft; flowers can be harvested before full bloom.
Maintenance: Prune in winter to control shape and encourage new growth.
Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply
Select Mature Berries: Allow berries to fully ripen on the bush before harvesting.
Extract Seeds: Gently mash and ferment berries in water, then separate seeds from pulp.
Dry and Store: Dry thoroughly and store in a cool, dark, and dry place. Stratification required before replanting.
