Pink Sand Verbena

Pink Sand Verbena

Abronia umbellata

Pink Sand Verbena is a beautiful and rare native plant found only on the sandy beaches and dunes of the Pacific West Coast. This low-growing perennial spreads across sandy soil, forming mats of vibrant pink blossoms that attract pollinators throughout the summer. Once common, it is now classified as endangered in Canada due to habitat loss and invasive species. Cultivating this plant in your garden helps support its recovery and preserve an important part of our coastal ecology.

Where Can You Grow Pink Sand Verbena?
Best suited for Zones 6–9 in full sun and if the soil is amended 25% with sand. It thrives in dry, exposed locations and is ideal for restoration planting, coastal gardens, and drought-tolerant landscapes. This lovely pink-flowered perennial is classified as endangered so please only purchase this rare seed if you are serious about supporting its conservation!

History and Historical Uses
Once widespread along British Columbia’s coast, Pink Sand Verbena (Abronia umbellata) has suffered severe declines due to coastal development and invasive plant competition. Efforts to restore this species have been underway through conservation groups and seed stewards. By growing this plant in your garden, you contribute directly to the protection and propagation of an endangered native species.

Canadian Zone Information
