Pole Bean Mix

Pole Bean Mix

Phaseolus vulgaris

This vibrant mix of pole beans has been selected by Metchosin Farm for flavour, colour, productivity, and variety. Including favourites like Emerite, Scarlet Runner, Rattlesnake, Jersey, Italian, and Goldrush, these beans offer something for everyone. Harvest pods fresh for crisp eating, cook them into warm meals, pickle them for winter, or allow them to dry on the vine for use in soups and stews. A great option for gardeners who want a visually striking, nutritious, and productive crop that climbs up supports and saves space.

Where Can You Grow Pole Bean Mix?
This mix is well-suited to Zones 3-9 and grows best in full sun with well-drained soil. Perfect for raised beds, container gardens with tall trellises, or open ground with vertical supports.

History and Historical Uses
Pole beans have long been a staple in gardens across the world for their vertical growth habit and long, generous harvest period. By mixing heirloom and open-pollinated varieties, gardeners enjoy a colourful harvest with rich culinary uses and stunning visual appeal. Traditionally dried beans also offered food security through the winter months.

Canadian Zone Information
Zones 8-9: Sow directly outdoors in late spring after the last frost for extended harvest through summer.
Zones 5-7: Direct sow after frost, or start indoors 2-3 weeks early to get a head start.
Zones 3-4: Start indoors and transplant after risk of frost has passed. Choose a warm, sunny location.

How to Grow and Harvest Pole Bean Mix

Planting: Sow seeds 2.5cm (1in) deep, 10-15cm (4-6in) apart along a strong trellis or pole support.
Watering: Keep soil moist but not soggy; mulch to help conserve moisture.
Harvesting: Pick beans young for tender fresh use, or let mature and dry on the vine for dried beans.
Maintenance: Provide sturdy vertical support and harvest regularly to encourage ongoing production.

Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply

Select Pods: Allow pods to fully mature and dry on the vine until they are crisp and brown.
Harvest Seeds: Remove beans from pods and inspect for firmness and dryness.
Dry and Store: Let seeds dry an extra few days indoors if needed, then store in airtight containers.
Store: Keep seeds in a cool, dry place; they will remain viable for up to 5 years.
