About Purple Sprouting Broccoli
Purple Sprouting Broccoli is a rewarding cool-season crop that produces an abundance of tasty purple shoots starting in April from a fall planting. This overwintering variety is known for its nutty, sweet flavour, and is grown not only for the tender spears, but also the tasty leaves and cheerful yellow flowers that appear in early summer. A true multi-purpose vegetable, this broccoli bridges the hungry gap in spring when fresh garden greens are scarce.
Where Can You Grow Purple Sprouting Broccoli?
Thrives in Zones 3–9, especially when fall-sown and overwintered. Requires full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. Ideal for garden beds with good air circulation and some shelter from harsh winter winds.
History and Historical Uses
Originally developed in the UK for cool maritime climates, purple sprouting broccoli has long been valued as a reliable early-spring vegetable. Its resilience and productivity have made it a staple in gardens across Northern Europe, and now in Canadian coastal regions. All parts of the plant are edible and nutritious, with high levels of vitamins C and K.
