Growing Information

About Purslane
Often overlooked or pulled out as a weed, Purslane is a truly underrated edible plant! Its succulent, fleshy leaves and tender stems offer a refreshing crunch and mild citrusy taste, making it a standout addition to fresh salads and summer dishes. Packed with antioxidants and omega-3s, it’s also one of the most nutrient-dense greens you can grow. Purslane is drought-tolerant, fast-growing, and thrives even in poor or disturbed soil, making it a great addition to low-maintenance edible landscapes.

Where Can You Grow Purslane?
Thrives in Zones 3–9 and prefers full sun and well-drained soil. Tolerant of drought and poor soil conditions, it is well-suited to garden beds, pathways, containers, and permaculture-style plantings.

History and Historical Uses
Purslane has been consumed for thousands of years across many cultures. Historically used in traditional Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and Asian cuisines, it’s praised for both culinary versatility and nutritional value. Once foraged in the wild, it’s now gaining popularity as a cultivated leafy green.

Canadian Zone Information
Zones 8-9: Direct sow in early spring; thrives in warm, dry locations.
Zones 5-7: Sow after danger of frost; tolerates hot summers and dry soil.
Zones 3-4: Start indoors or sow late spring for reliable warm-weather growth.

How to Grow and Harvest Purslane

Planting: Sow seeds shallowly, just covered, in warm soil. Thin to 15cm (6in) spacing.
Watering: Water occasionally; tolerates dry conditions once established.
Harvesting: Begin harvesting young stems and leaves once plants reach 10cm (4in); cut-and-come-again style works best.
Maintenance: Very low maintenance; allow a few plants to go to seed for future growth.

Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply

Select Mature Plants: Allow plants to flower and set seed.
Harvest Seed Heads: Collect dried seed heads before they shatter.
Clean and Dry: Rub seeds free from husks and dry thoroughly.
Store: Store in a cool, dry, dark place; viable for 3–5 years.
