Skull-cap

Skull-Cap

Scutellaria lateriflora

Skull Cap is a low-growing native perennial herb known for its calming properties and delicate beauty. It forms clumps of toothed green foliage topped with dainty, blue-violet helmet-shaped flowers, blooming through the summer. Well-suited to damp woodland edges, shaded borders or herb gardens, it is prized both for its medicinal value and pollinator support. This is an excellent addition to any herbal apothecary or permaculture planting.

Where Can You Grow Skull Cap?
Thrives in Zones 3–9 in moist, well-drained soil with partial shade. Excellent for rain gardens, woodland edges, or damp perennial beds.

History and Historical Uses
Skull Cap has long been valued in traditional Western herbalism as a nervine tonic and sleep aid. Indigenous peoples and early settlers used it as a remedy for anxiety, tension, and nervous system support. It continues to be an important herb in natural medicine, especially in tea and tincture form.

Collect Seeds: Once dry, gently shake seed heads into a paper bag.
Dry and Store: Let seeds dry further indoors, then store in airtight container.
Store: Keep cool, dark, and dry; viable for up to 3 years.
