Growing Information

About Sunflower Mix
This colourful sunflower mix is a Metchosin Farm original, grown and saved from a variety of stunning blooms in our gardens. With a range of heights, bloom shapes, and warm-toned colours, these sunflowers brighten the garden and support biodiversity. The edible petals add colour to summer salads, and the seeds can be enjoyed as a snack or left to provide food for overwintering birds.

Where Can You Grow Sunflower Mix?
Sunflowers thrive in full sun and well-drained soil and are well-suited to Zones 3–9. These plants are drought-tolerant once established and ideal for garden beds, borders, and wildlife gardens.

History and Historical Uses
Sunflowers are native to the Americas and have long been valued for their ornamental beauty, edible seeds, and usefulness as wildlife habitat. Historically, sunflowers have been used for food, oil, and dye, with continued popularity for garden displays and ecological support.

Canadian Zone Information
Zones 8–9: Direct sow in spring after last frost.
Zones 5–7: Direct sow in late spring or start indoors 2–3 weeks early.
Zones 3–4: Start seeds indoors and transplant after frost risk has passed.

How to Grow and Harvest Sunflower Mix
Planting: Sow seeds 1–2cm (1/2–3/4in) deep, 30cm (12in) apart in full sun.
Watering: Water deeply until established; drought-tolerant afterward.
Harvesting: Harvest mature seed heads to eat, save, or use in bird feeders.
Maintenance: Deadhead to encourage blooms or leave to support pollinators and birds.

Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply
Select Mature Heads: Let seed heads dry fully on the plant.
Harvest Seeds: Cut heads and rub out seeds once dry.
Dry and Store: Fully air dry before storing in a paper envelope.
Store: Keep in a cool, dry, dark place; viable for 4–6 years.
