The Herbal Tea Collection

The Herbal Tea Collection

Multiple

The Herbal Tea Collection brings together Yarrow, Holy Basil, Catnip, Lemon Balm, and Chamomile—each renowned for its soothing, aromatic qualities. Whether steeped individually or combined for a signature blend, these herbs offer a delightful tea‐making experience right from your own garden.

Where Can You Grow
These herbs thrive in full sun to light shade with well-drained, fertile soil. Sow in dedicated tea beds, mixed herb borders, or pots. Regular watering and occasional feeding with compost tea ensure lush, healthy growth.

History and Historical Uses

  • Yarrow: Used since ancient Greece for digestive support and wound‐healing poultices.

  • Holy Basil (Tulsi): Revered in Ayurvedic medicine as an adaptogen for stress relief and immune support.

  • Catnip: Traditional European and Native American remedy for insomnia and digestive upset.

  • Lemon Balm: Valued in medieval Europe as a calming tonic and antiviral infusion.

  • Chamomile: Ancient Egyptian and Roman favourite for its gentle sedative and anti‐inflammatory properties.

Canadian Zone Information

Zones 3–9: Direct sow Chamomile and Yarrow after last frost; start Basil and Lemon Balm indoors 4–6 weeks before transplant; Catnip perennials best established from transplants or early-spring sowing.

How to Grow and Harvest

  • Sowing: Sow herb seeds ¼ in deep in moist soil; keep evenly moist until germination.

  • Spacing: Thin to 12–18 in apart for robust air circulation.

  • Maintenance: Trim flower heads (except Chamomile) to encourage foliage growth; pinch back Basil for bushier plants.

  • Harvest: Harvest leaves and flowers just before full bloom; dry in small bundles in a dark, ventilated area.

Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply

  • Isolation: Space varieties at least 3 ft apart to avoid cross-pollination.

  • Collection: Allow select flower heads to mature and dry on the plant; collect seeds when pods or heads are crisp.

  • Cleaning & Storage: Gently thresh to release seeds; winnow away chaff; store airtight in a cool, dark place.
