About Yellow Yarrow
Yellow Yarrow is a rugged and reliable perennial offering striking golden flower clusters held above dense, deeply cut foliage. Compared to the more common white yarrow, this variety features thicker stems, more robust growth, and highly compact flower bracts. A standout in the ornamental or pollinator garden, it performs well even in poor soil and dry conditions. Its vivid yellow blooms are long-lasting, making this a great plant for both fresh and dried floral arrangements.

Where Can You Grow Yellow Yarrow?
Well-suited for Zones 3-9 in full sun and well-drained soils. Yellow Yarrow is ideal for xeriscaping, borders, rock gardens, and areas where low water use is a priority. It also thrives in wildflower and pollinator-focused plantings.

History and Historical Uses
Yarrow (Achillea spp.) has long been used in traditional medicine and folklore for its healing properties, and yellow varieties have been cultivated for ornamental purposes due to their extended bloom time and vibrant colour. Historically prized in dried floral crafts and herbal applications, this plant continues to be a favourite in low-maintenance gardens.

Canadian Zone Information
Zones 8-9: Direct sow in autumn or early spring; drought tolerant and blooms summer through fall.
Zones 5-7: Sow indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost or direct sow in spring; mulch in winter for added protection.
Zones 3-4: Hardy with protection; choose well-drained soil and a sunny location for best performance.

How to Grow and Harvest Yellow Yarrow
Planting: Sow seeds shallowly (no more than 0.5cm deep). Space plants 30-45cm (12-18in) apart.
Watering: Water during establishment, then reduce; very drought tolerant once mature.
Harvesting: Cut stems when flowers are just beginning to open for drying or use in arrangements.
Maintenance: Deadhead for prolonged blooming; cut back in late autumn or early spring.

Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply
Select Seed Heads: Allow flowers to dry on the plant until seeds form.
Harvest: Snip entire seed heads and place in a paper bag to dry further.
Store: Separate seeds and store in a cool, dry, dark place.
Viability: Seeds remain viable for 4-6 years when stored properly.
