Lemon Balm

Lemon Balm Rootstock

Melissa officinalis

Lemon Balm is a fresh and aromatic perennial herb with a delightful citrus fragrance. Its zesty leaves are excellent in teas, culinary dishes, and herbal remedies, and are also widely used in essential oils for their calming properties. Easy to grow and maintain, Lemon Balm thrives in both full sun and partial shade, brightening gardens with its lush foliage and small white blossoms. It is an ideal choice for herb gardens, borders, and pollinator-friendly spaces.

Where Can You Grow Lemon Balm?
Lemon Balm does well in Zones 4-9. It prefers moist, well-drained soil and grows happily in full sun to partial shade. A great addition to herb gardens, containers, and shady corners.

History and Historical Uses
Native to southern Europe and the Mediterranean, Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) has been grown for over 2,000 years. Traditionally used to calm the nervous system and improve sleep, it has also been prized for its culinary and cosmetic uses. In folklore, it was believed to attract bees and promote longevity.

Canadian Zone Information
Zones 8-9: Direct sow in spring or fall; harvest regularly for continued growth.
Zones 5-7: Start indoors in early spring or direct sow after last frost.
Zones 4: Grow in containers or mulch heavily for winter protection outdoors.

How to Grow and Harvest Lemon Balm

Planting: Sow seeds 6mm (¼in) deep; space plants 30-45cm (12-18in) apart.
Watering: Keep soil consistently moist until established; drought tolerant once mature.
Harvesting: Pick leaves anytime during the growing season, ideally before flowering.
Maintenance: Cut back after flowering to encourage new growth and prevent self-seeding.

Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply

Let Plants Flower: Allow several plants to produce flower spikes and go to seed.
Harvest Seeds: Once seed heads dry and turn brown, collect them carefully.
Dry and Store: Separate seeds from husks and dry thoroughly; store in an airtight container.
Viability: Seeds remain viable for 2-4 years under cool, dry conditions.
