Growing Information

About Motherwort

Motherwort is a striking herbaceous perennial in the mint family, long valued in herbal traditions for its support of heart health, female reproductive balance, and digestive function. Reaching up to 3m tall, the sturdy, prickly stems form a strong summer hedge that not only attracts pollinators with its small pink flowers, but also helps deter deer and other animals from garden beds. This plant is especially well-suited to naturalised herb gardens or the back border of ornamental plots.

Where Can You Grow Motherwort?

Ideal for Zones 4-9, Motherwort grows well in full sun to part shade and prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil. It tolerates poor soils and self-seeds readily once established.

History and Historical Uses

Native to central Asia and southeastern Europe, Motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca) has been naturalised across the globe for centuries. Historically used in European herbal medicine as a remedy for anxiety, menstrual cramps, and palpitations, it remains a staple in many modern herbal apothecaries. Its name, "Motherwort", reflects its traditional association with female reproductive health.

Canadian Zone Information

Zones 8-9: Direct sow outdoors in autumn or early spring.
Zones 5-7: Start indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost or direct sow in spring.
Zones 4: Mulch well or grow in sheltered microclimates for perennial success.

How to Grow and Harvest Motherwort

Planting: Sow seeds on soil surface and lightly press down. Requires light to germinate.
Watering: Keep evenly moist until established, then water occasionally.
Harvesting: Harvest aerial parts when in full bloom for best medicinal value.
Maintenance: Self-seeds readily—cut back before seed set to control spread.

Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply

Select Healthy Plants: Choose vigorous, mature plants for seed saving.
Let Seeds Ripen: Allow flower spikes to dry on the plant.
Harvest Seeds: Collect when seeds are dry and brown; shake into a container.
Dry and Store: Air-dry completely and store in a cool, dry place. Viable for 3-5 years.
