Purple Haida Potato

Solanum tuberosum

This 2026 hybrid variety developed at Metchosin Farm through our Potato Project breeding program. It was inspired by the heritage and resilience of the traditional Haida Potato and was derived from it and our own MyChosen Purple Potato. This unique selection produces small to medium-sized tubers with striking purple flesh and a smooth skin, offering a creamy texture and rich, earthy flavour. Its vibrant colour holds well when cooked, making it an eye-catching addition to a wide range of dishes. Bred for performance in coastal climates, Purple Haida Potato combines beauty, flavour, and reliability in a truly distinctive new variety. It differs from our Midnight Mix as you are guaranteed to get only this variety.

Where Can You Grow Purple Haida Potato
Purple Haida Potato thrives in cool, temperate climates and performs especially well in coastal regions with moderate summers. It prefers full sun and fertile, well-drained soil, while maintaining tolerance for damp, maritime conditions. Suitable for garden beds, raised beds, and larger containers with adequate depth.

History and Historical Uses
Developed and released in 2026 at Metchosin Farm, this variety builds on the legacy of the Haida Potato while introducing a vibrant new expression through careful hybrid selection. While distinct, it honours the long-standing tradition of potato cultivation on the Pacific Northwest Coast, where similar varieties have been valued for their resilience, flavour, and storage qualities.
