Growing Information

About Snapdragon Mix
A garden classic, snapdragons bring a vibrant, cheerful display to any space with their tall spires of colourful blooms. Easy to grow and care for, these plants flower from midsummer right into the first frosts. Children love playing with the flowers, which open and close like little jaws when gently pinched—hence the name. This mix includes a wide range of hues, making it a beautiful and dynamic addition to borders, containers, or cut flower gardens.

Where Can You Grow Snapdragon Mix?
Best suited for Zones 3–9, snapdragons prefer well-drained soil and full to partial sun. They thrive in flower beds, cottage gardens, and containers. Tolerant of cool weather and even light frost, they make a great addition to late-season displays.

History and Historical Uses
Snapdragons (Antirrhinum majus) have been grown for centuries for their striking shape and wide colour range. They were once believed to offer protection from witchcraft and bad luck, and their seed heads were sometimes carried as charms. Today, they are widely appreciated for their ornamental value and long blooming season.

Canadian Zone Information
Zones 8-9: Direct sow outdoors in early spring; blooms persist into autumn.
Zones 5-7: Start indoors 6–8 weeks before last frost and transplant after danger of frost.
Zones 3-4: Start indoors early and harden off before transplanting to extend the growing season.

How to Grow and Harvest Snapdragon Mix
Planting: Sow seeds on the surface or just lightly covered, as they need light to germinate.
Watering: Keep moist during germination; once established, water regularly but do not overwater.
Harvesting: Snip flower spikes when 1/3–1/2 of the blooms are open for best vase life.
Maintenance: Deadhead spent blooms to encourage new flowers and prevent excess self-seeding.

Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply
Select Healthy Plants: Allow some flower spikes to go to seed naturally.
Harvest Seeds: Wait until seed pods are brown and dry, then gently collect.
Dry and Store: Fully dry seeds before storing in a sealed container.
Store: Keep in a cool, dark place; seeds remain viable for up to 3 years.
